Matera, City of Stones UNESCO World Heritage Centre

Matera, City of Sassi, located in the southern Italian region of Basilicata, is the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem.

The Sassi and the Park of the Rupestrian Churches of Matera comprises a complex of houses, churches, monasteries and hermitages built into the natural caves of the Murgia.

The morphology of the territory, characterized by deep ravines (gravine) and bare highland plateaus, integrated with ancient cave churches, shepherd tracks marked by wells, and fortified farmhouses, form one of the most evocative landscapes of the Mediterranean.

Discover The Sassi district, which has been renovated and has regained new dignity and new life with Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, the heart of the City of Matera.

The Sassi district surround the Civita and constitute a city unto itself, completely carved out of the face of the calcareous rock, known as tufa stone, and is a system made of dwellings carved out of the steep slopes of a deep valley with surprising and unusual features called the “Gravina”.

UNESCO declared the Sassi to be a World Heritage Site in 1993
